Owning a house is fantastic. It beats living at an apartment in so many ways. You have all that space and your neighbours are just a little bit farther than the ones living in the flat next to yours. But one of the biggest advantages is having a yard. Yes, maintaining your house clean can be quite challenging especially if your property is larger than average but if you can afford it then you can perhaps also afford to pay a maid or a cleaning company which will also take care of all sorts of junk removal and not only sanitation. But before you start planning on who to call for your pile of landscaping rubbish you should decide what you are going to do with all that space you have in the backyard.
Let’s start by reserving a spot for a small shed as it is probably the one thing you simply need to have in your yard. This is the place where you keep all your tools and your machinery. It also makes for a great store house and the funny thing about sheds is that even though they look small they seem to be bottomless and can keep accommodating more and more of the junk that you stuff in there.
You can always go with a classic choice
The first option is usually having a set of chairs and a table in your backyard. Most people think about sitting there having a drink with a friend or family members and enjoying the sun in the morning or the evening. It is not a bad idea and many families see this as an opportunity to enjoy a breakfast outside when the weather is good. You need to have a couple of things in mind, however. First of all it will get dirty relatively often. You will need to wipe your furniture outside more than once a day. The wind will bring all sorts of dust and particles and there are birds who really don’t care about how good you have it. You should also figure out a way to light this area if you are looking to stay out when it gets dark. The most important thing however is having some sort a shelter over it or a tent. It will protect your chairs and table from sun and rain. It will also protect the inhabitants (you) from having to fry at the sun.
Some sports fans will come up with more interesting solutions. Building a court with a hoop is simply a marvelous idea and not only parents love it but kids too. It will be quite challenging to build it and you might need professional help. Hiring a handy man will end up costing you some money but it will be well worth it in the end. It will develop a lot of your kid’s skills:
- Athleticism
- Basketball skill
- Team work
- Respect
The investment doesn’t stop there. Buying a basket and mounting it in a poll will also set you back somewhere in the hundreds. You also need to figure out how wide and long this court will be. If your yard is not big enough then you should perhaps drop it. But if you have on your disposal space with proportions of about 20 feet by 20 feet it should be enough for a quick pick up game of 1 on 1. It will also allow your child to socialise quicker. Such an installation is usually a magnet for kids who live in the neighbourhood. You child will perhaps become pretty popular if you allow their friends to occasionally come and play in your backyard. By all means go for it if you have the opportunity, well… and the blessing of your significant other.
If you find yourself not knowing what to do with a larger sum of money then you can always opt for one of dreams of modern society – building a pool in the backyard. Now this is a perk which very few families can afford and most rich folks usually do it in their mansion. But nobody said it was wrong to have a pool in the backyard. Yes, it might not be very big but will be just fine and can also be a magnet for other people to come and join you (similar to having a small basketball court). Now you might not be able to practice for Olympic swimming there but in terms of relaxation it should be alright. Maintaining it clean is the real pain. But if you can afford building it and supplying it with water, and having a filtration system installed then you should be able to hire professionals to remove all the leaves from it. This is the average size of pools in yards.
Proportions | Size |
20×20 feet | Small |
30×30 feet | Medium |
40×40 Feet | Big |
Another conservative option is having a garden in the backyard
Now you can also go with some classic choices and decide to have a garden in your backyard. Its nature might vary. You can go with a floral garden where you will be growing flowers and bushes and thus giving an overall pleasant view of your backyard. If you can manage to keep all the plants alive then your garden will look beautiful and will perhaps smell nice as well. Having a dog might not be a great idea at this point because it might just run around stomping all the delicate flowers.
You can also turn your garden into a small vegetable plantation. While it will require almost daily care it will surely pay off in a great way. Many people would love to have fresh vegetables in their plate straight from the garden and you should not pass on that opportunity. You might need to get familiar with how things are done because knowledge is a must when it comes to growing your own food. You can do a lot of things with the space in your backyard and indeed the sky is the limit. Let loose your imagination and come up with something good.
