Home remodeling and renovation projects are expected to come with certain amounts of stress. Usually people think that the mess around the house and the chance to come across an unethical contractor are the biggest risks related to home improvement, but the truth is that there are a number of other hidden dangers that bear the potential of making your life miserable while you are actually trying to make your home a better place.
- All the rubbish. Even the smallest repairs and remodeling jobs tend to produce unimaginable amounts of junk that are pretty hard to get rid of once the work is done. The reason for that is simple – you will be just too tired of everything you have already done to be willing to bother with collecting the junk on your own and driving it to the depot. As a result, there will be much clutter and the effect of your home remodeling can easily be negated. The solution however is simple. Go online and see which junk removal and waste disposal companies operate in your area. Request quotes, compare them and see which one offers the best deal. Then call and book their services for the day your renovation is expected to be completed.
- The pets. Your dog is likely to feel pretty nervous around strangers, especially the heavy booted contractors who are going to wonder around his territory for days. This will cause quite a tension at the work place for the contractors, and your pet will not be happy either. The solution is to either send the animal to a kennel until the completion of the job, or better yet, let it stay with a trustworthy family member.
- The noise and excessive traffic that your renovation may cause is likely to tip off your neighbors. We all have had them at least at one point in our life – those constantly complaining trouble making neighbors. In the case of home renovation, they may even cause you problems with the local authorities. So it is better to give everyone on the street a heads-up about what you intend to do, so that they cannot say they have not been warned.
- Junk and dust especially, will not be isolated just to the area where the construction is taking place. Plaster dust goes generally everywhere and it is plainly annoying. The way to prevent that from happening is to isolate the construction site with plastic barriers – they are to be found in your local hardware store.
- You will have to consider your schedule according to the workers’ one. You will have to make arrangements day for day, because for example you would have to drop the kids at school or have an important meeting at the office, so you will have to be constantly in touch with the contractor. This is naturally stressful for both sides, and in order to avoid that, you might consider moving in with a friend, or go out for town for a couple of days, until the project is completed.
