Clerkenwell can be described as a former monastic settlement which has grown rather hedonistic in the last decades. The suburb is strategically placed between King’s Cross and the City of London. Historically, the first establishments in Clerkenwel were a hospital and a priory by Jordan De Briset and Mrs De Briset – his wife. This happened circa the year eleven hundred and forty. The area takes its name from a well, from which the nuns at the priory drew water. The ‘Clerk’ bit comes from city students who performed an annual miracle play nearby. The next major development was the founding of another priory by Sir Walter De Manny. However it was reformed into a manor house after King Henry VIII’s order for dissolution of the monasteries. In later centuries, the rambling mansion became Charterhouse School, which in turn today is one of London’s most picturesque and pristine retirement homes.
